Beginning Yoga
We recommend all students new to yoga, as well as students new to Iyengar Yoga (even if they have experience in other methods) begin with our Introductory classes. This will ensure you begin your practice with solid fundamentals and a clear understanding of the techniques, concepts, core alignment points integral to Iyengar Yoga, and key to steady and safe progress into more advanced practices.
This class emphasizes standing postures, basic seated postures, twists, and beginning inversions such as Salamba Sarvangasana (shoulder stand). (Several sessions are recommended before moving on to Multilevel)
Tips for your first class
We salute your choice to begin the practice of yoga. Here are some helpful guidelines to ensure your experience is as rewarding and effective as possible.
Avoid drinking any fluids for at least one hour prior to your practice. Also, please leave at least 2 1/2 hours between a light meal and class, four hours between an heavy meal and class. Be sure to arrive ten to fifteen minutes early. If you do arrive late, please enter quietly and only after the brief opening meditation. Be prepared to stay for the entire length of the class, through the final resting posture (Savasana).
It’s best to wear comfortable, stretchy and form-fitting clothing in which you can easily move. We recommend dressing in layers as your body temperature and the room temperature can change throughout your practice. Be prepared to participate with bare feet.
All equipment (mats, blocks, straps, and blankets) will be provided. If you prefer to bring your own Yoga mat, you are welcome to do so.
We ask that no shoes, cell phones or personal effects are brought into the studio. We also request that class participants abstain from wearing heavily scented personal- or laundry- care products. Please treat the studio as a scent-free zone.
